In a tragic incident, two autorickshaw drivers were killed in an accident when a speeding state tranport corporation bus hit an autorickshaw in which they were travelling on Old Mahabalipuram Road at Thoraipakkam on Saturday night.

Two more autorickshaw drivers were injured, while three other drivers escaped unhurt. The injured were rushed to a private hospital and later referred to government hospital.

Police identified the deceased as Ramesh (45) of Neelankarai and Deva Senapathy (28) of Perungudi. The victims met with the accident when they were returning after attending a friend's marriage function on Saturday, police said.

Murugan and Ezhumalai sustained multiple fractures and were rushed to the government general hospital. Police said the drivers had got together to participate in a marriage function of one of their friends in Kelambakkam and were returning home.

When they were nearing Thoraipakkam, a state transport corporation bus, headed towards Pondicherry, collided head on with the autorickshaw in which they were travelling.

Two of them died on the spot. In the impact, the autorickshaw rolled along the road for several metres and stopped after hitting a tree on the roadside.

Some of the residents of the locality and fellow riders informed the police and tried to extricate them from the mangled vehicle.

The injured were taken to a nearby private hospital. Police said the accident might have happened when the autorickshaw tried to overtake another vehicle proceeding in the same direction. The police have registered a case.
