How to investigate an accident scene - getting started.

The Nine Most Important Things You Need to Know After An Auto Accident

After an accident, it is sometimes difficult to know where to begin. Here are some tips:

If there appear to be injuries, call 911 immediately. After that, note exactly where you are - what road you are (or were) on at the time of the collision, and the names of any nearby intersecting roads. Also note which direction you were headed at the time of the collision.Look for the posted speed limit for the roadway.

Make sure you know the number of lanes of traffic in the roadway, and the lane that you were in prior to the collision. Note the traffic conditions that existed just before the collision. Was there light, moderate, or heavy traffic? Determine the placement of your vehicle after it came to a stop, as well as the placement of any other vehicles involved in the accident, after they came to a stop. Look at the point or points of impact on your vehicle - in other words, the place or places where your vehicle was struck. Do the same with the point or points of impact on the other vehicles involved in the accident. Note the location of any skid marks on the roadway, and determine which vehicle(s) made them. Try to recall what you heard just prior to the collision. Did you hear any squealing tires, from someone braking suddenly, or from a vehicle spinning? Did you hear any other impacts?

Try to recall the number of impacts you felt in the collision. This can be particularly important in multi-vehicle, rear-end collisions. If you have a camera with you, take photographs of the accident scene and the vehicles involved. If anyone else has stopped at the accident scene, ask them what they saw. Be sure to get their name and phone number before they leave.

If police have arrived at the scene, be sure to speak with them about the accident, if at all possible. All too often, police officers will fail to speak with all of the parties to an accident. If that happens, the chances increase that the police will have an inaccurate view of the way that the accident happened, making it more likely that the person that they didn’t talk to is blamed for the accident.

Whether or not the police come out to the accident scene, talk to the other drivers involved, and write down their names and insurance information.
