Hurt in a car wreck with no health insurance

Clients sometimes ask me if it is possible for them to receive medical treatment for their injuries if they do not have health insurance.

The answer is yes.

We work with many qualified doctors in the area who provide medical treatment to accident victims based on a "Letter of Protection." A Letter of Protection is simply a letter from the lawyer to the doctor guaranteeing that the doctor's bill will be paid from the settlement proceeds.

With this type of arrangement, it is possible for clients to be seen by a doctor very quickly, sometimes even the same day that the client first calls us.

Clients are typically first seen by a doctor who provides the initial examination and determines the best course of treatment for the client, based on the type and extent of injuries.

If a prescription for pain medicine or a muscle relaxant is written, that prescription can be filled by a pharmacy that will also accept a Letter of Protection, so that the client does not need to come out of pocket for the expense.

In the same way, if it is determined that additional diagnostic testing is needed, and the doctor orders that an MRI or a Nerve Conduction Study be performed, those tests can be carried out under a Letter of Protection.  The same is true if the doctor refers the client to a specialist, like an orthopedic surgeon or a neurologist.

This type of financial arrangement allows medical treatment to begin almost immediately after the accident. The timing of such treatment is important not only for medical reasons, to help the accident victim begin the recovery process, but also in terms of the insurance claim, since insurance companies for the party at fault in the accident will often try to penalize accident victims by offering a much lower settlement amount if there has been a significant gap between the date of the accident and the date that medical treatment began.
